SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a) to an Office 2000 administration point, so that subsequent remote installations of Office use the upgraded version, the installation is not completed, and you receive one or both of the following error messages:

Internal Error 2203

-or-

Internal Error 2381

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of one of the following conditions:

  • The Data1.msi file is marked with read-only permissions. -or-
  • The directory:\Temp\installs directory does not have SYSTEM as an allowable user permission. Other directory folders, such as directory:\WINNT\Installer, may also need SYSTEM set to Full Control.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Data1.msi File Is Marked with READ Permissions

If the cause is that the Data1.msi file is marked with READ permissions, follow these steps to remove the read-only restriction on the Data1.msi file:

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder that contains the Data1.msi file.
2. Right-click the Data1.msi file, and then click Properties.
3. In the Data1.msi Properties dialog box, click to clear the Read-only check box under Attributes, and then click OK.

Method 2: Installs Directory Does Not Have SYSTEM as an Allowable User Permission

If the cause is that the Installs directory does not have SYSTEM as an allowable user permission, add SYSTEM to the list of permissions for the directory. To do this, right-click the folder and then click Sharing.
